Another Death At EMDC

London police are awaiting results of an autopsy after another inmate death at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre.

The inmate died Sunday, becoming the sixth inmate to die at the jail since the beginning of last year.

Thirteen inmates have died at the EMDC in the past eight years.

So far, police do not believe there were any suspicious circumstances involved in the latest fatality.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Monday.

Word of the latest death prompted Elgin-Middlesex-London Progressive Conservative MPP Jeff Yurek to renew his calls for the government to immediately launch a third party, independent audit of the EMDC.

"It is a government’s job to provide an environment that is safe for inmates, staff and correctional officers, while ensuring that proper mental health supports are available. Sadly, the Wynne government is failing to deliver in all of these areas," said Yurek.

Yurek believes an audit would not only identify the root cause of the issues at EMDC, but would also provide solutions that would resolve the ongoing problems.
