Bathroom Reno Sparks House Fire

A washroom renovation is being blamed for sparking a house fire northwest of London.

Middlesex Centre firefighters were called to a home at 23259 Nairn Rd., north of Egermont Dr. in Lobo around 9am Wednesday.

"On arrival they found light smoke conditions coming out of the front door," said Fire Chief Colin Tooth. "Our response time was very fast, a little over six minutes... In the end it wasn't a hard fire to fight. We knew where it was, we exposed that area, and got to it quickly."

The homeowner, who was alone inside the home at the time, made it out without injury before fire crews arrived.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious and appears to have been caused by do-it-yourself renovation work in the washroom.

"The homeowner was doing a home renovation as it applied to the piping and it looks like in the course of heating that pipe to get it off, to replace it, he caught something that extended to the wood, causing fire to get into the wall and from that point it grew," said Tooth.

Damage is estimated at $20,000.
