Local Jobless Rate Drops

A bigger labour force and more people with jobs added up to a drop in the London-St. Thomas unemployment rate in May.

According to Statistics Canada, the jobless rate in the London-St. Thomas Census Metropolitan area was 5.3% last month, down from 5.7% in April.

The federal agency says the number of people working in the area climbed by 1,400 in May. The figures released Friday also show an increase of 500 in the size of the local labour force, which includes people are working or looking for work.

The number of people collecting unemployment benefits shrank by 900.

Nationally, the unemployment rate held steady at 5.8%

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
