Seven Inmates Overdose At Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre

An investigation is ongoing after seven inmates at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC) overdosed on suspected opiates on the same day.

London police Constable Michelle Romano said the seven individuals were all in the same area in a group of around ten to 14 inmates when they overdosed on Thursday.  Officers were called to the detention centre at around 2:15pm.

Romano said naloxone was used to revive at least one of the inmates and all seven were conscious when they were taken to hospital.  As of 5pm, six remain at London Health Science Centre in fair condition, while one was in serious condition.

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has been notified and will be conducting an investigation into the incident.

The Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre has been thrust into the spotlight time and time again over concerns of overcrowding and understaffing. A total of 13 inmates have died at the EMDC in the past eight years.
