SIU Clears Police In Woman's Fatal Balcony Fall

The province's police watchdog has ended an investigation into the death of a 24-year-old woman who fell from a balcony last month in southwest London.

London police were called about a woman in distress at an apartment on Wonderland Rd. S, near Southdale Ave. around 9:50pm July 15. Two officers, one of whom is a trained negotiator, tried to negotiate with the woman, but she fell from the sixth-floor balcony to the ground below. Police attempted to resuscitate the woman until paramedics arrived. She was then rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead at 10:48pm.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was called in to investigate the fatal incident. Three investigators and two forensic investigators were assigned to the case.

An autopsy performed the following day found the woman died from injuries consistent with a fall from a height.

“It is apparent that the woman fell to her death of her own volition and that there is nothing to investigate as far as any potential criminality is concerned on the part of the officers who were on scene at the time in question," SIU Acting Director Joseph Martino said in a statement Thursday. "Accordingly, this investigation is terminated."

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
