St. Thomas Area Hydro Customers Warned About Scam

Residents of the St. Thomas area are being warned about a phone scam making the rounds.

Electricity provider Entegrus said it has been informed of customers being contacted by phone by people claiming to be Entegrus representatives, who are threatening the customers with disconnection if they don't pay a non-existent overdue ill.

"Payment acquisition for overdue accounts is not conducted in this way," Entegrus said in a statement released Tuesday. "Customers are asked to never provide any personal information to unknown people over the phone."

Anyone who has received one of these calls is asked to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. It's also recommended that if someone calls and threatens to disconnect your electricity if you don’t make a payment right away by pre-paid credit card or wire transfer, you should hang up immediately.
