SIU contacted after crash in Elgin County

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a collision in Elgin County.

Ontario Provincial Police say the incident happened around 11 p.m. Friday on Richmond Rd. near Heritage Line in Bayham. Police say only one vehicle was involved and the driver left the scene. Three passengers went to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

The OPP brought in its Emergency Response Team and Canine Unit to look for the driver, who was eventually located and arrested without incident. The driver was also treated in hospital for injuries received in the crash.

35-year-old Anthony Ferriera of Ingersoll is charged with two counts of driving a motor vehicle while impaired causing bodily harm, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop at the scene of a crash and theft under $5,000.

The OPP has notified the SIU, which has invoked its mandate. No further information will be released.

The charges have yet to be proven in court.
