Townhouse significantly damaged by fire

London fire officials are trying to determine the cause of a fire that left a townhouse with extensive damage.

Firefighters were called to the townhouse complex on Summit Avenue, across from the London Muslim Mosque, just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday after neighbours spotted smoke billowing out of one of the units.

"When crews arrived there was heavy black smoke in the air and flames visible coming out of the basement window," said Acting Deputy Fire Chief Jack Burt. "There was a report of one person inside at the time, but that person was later found to be at school. There were no injuries as a result of the fire, including to firefighters."

The fire began in the basement of the townhouse, but the exact cause has not yet been determined, said Burt.

Two investigators have been assigned and were still at the scene as of Tuesday afternoon.

A damage estimate has not yet been released, but could be quite high.

"The damage was fair extensive to the unit. Heavy smoke damage on the first floor and second floor and significant fire damage in the basement," said Burt.
