Burst watermain slows downtown traffic

A week after a watermain break near downtown London caused traffic headaches during the morning commute, another pipe has ruptured.

The watermain break Tuesday morning led city officials to close eastbound Dundas Street between Wellington and Clarence. The eastbound lane re-opened just after noon.

"It's just aging infrastructure and change in water temperature effects the older pipes and causes them to crack and leak," said Mat da Cost, water operations supervisor with the city.

That particular stretch of road is scheduled to be overhauled next year, which da Cost noted will include an upgrade to all of the pipes and infrastructure.

Last Tuesday, a watermain burst on Oxford Street at Talbot Street, causing a section of the busy roadway to crumble.
