Vehicle flees from police, hits house

Impaired driving charges are among those that have been laid against an 18-year-old St. Thomas man after a vehicle took off from police and later crashed into a home in Sparta.

Elgin OPP tried to pull a vehicle over around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday in the area of Union, but the vehicle took off. Out of concern for pubic safety officers did not chase the fleeing vehicle.

Shortly after, police were called about a vehicle that collided with a house on Sparta Line. The driver of the vehicle reportedly ran away following the crash.

The canine unit and St. Thomas police were brought in to help with the search, which ended with a man being arrested without incident.

An 18-year-old from St. Thomas is charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, flight from peace officers, driving while prohibited, and trespassing.

He will appear in court in relation to the charges on February 19.
