Charges laid in fatal motorcycle crash

More than five months after a crash that claimed the life of a motorcyclist south of London, a 76-year-old Aylmer man has been charged with careless driving.

Brent Austin, 45, of Strathroy-Caradoc was riding one of two motorcycles north on Belmont Road in Central Elgin around 4 p.m. on August 29 of last year when they collided with a southbound SUV that was attempting to turn left onto Yorke Line.

Austin was rushed to hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The other motorcycle driver and the driver of the SUV were also taken to hospital. Both were treated and released two days later.

Martin Poelman of Aylmer is now charged under the Highway Traffic Act in connection with the crash, Elgin OPP said Wednesday.

He is scheduled to appear in St. Thomas provincial court on March 14.
