One man killed in apartment fire

One man is dead following a fire at a west London highrise.

Emergency crews were called to 595 Proudfoot Lane just before 9:30 p.m. on Sunday after thick smoke was reported on the seventh floor of the 14-storey apartment building.

One man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but was later pronounced dead. His name is not being released until London police are able to notify his family.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.

While the fire was contained to a single unit, the building was evacuated as a precaution. A London Transit bus was brought in to keep residents warm while firefighters worked to douse the blaze.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been contacted and the investigation is in its early stages, said police.
