Careless smoking caused fatal fire

A fire that claimed the life of a resident of a London apartment building was caused by careless smoking.

London police announced on Monday that an investigation into the February 24 blaze on Proudfoot Lane determined the cause of the fire.

"The 57-year-old male victim’s cause of death was determined to be smoke inhalation and the cause of the fire was careless smoking," police said in a statement issued Monday.

The victim's name has not been released.

Emergency crews were called to 595 Proudfoot Lane just before 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 24 after thick smoke was reported on the seventh floor of the 14-storey apartment building. While the fire was contained to a single unit, the building was evacuated as a precaution. A London Transit bus was brought in to keep residents warm while firefighters worked to put out the fire.
