Tired bus driver crashes into ditch

A school bus driver who crashed into a ditch late last week was allegedly "tired" at the time, according to Norfolk OPP.

The bus was on Swimming Pool Road in Windham when it drifted into the ditch around 4:17 p.m. last Thursday. There were no students on board and the bus driver was not hurt.

"It was determined that the operator was tired when the incident occurred," police said in a statement issued Monday.

"Most people recognize the dangers of driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, however, many do not realize that driving while drowsy can be just as fatal," said OPP Inspector Joseph Varga. "Sleepiness not only slows reaction time, it decreases awareness, impairs judgment and increases the driver's risk of crashing."

The bus was not damaged in the crash.
