London cop punched in face during arrest

A London police officer was punched in the face while trying to arrest a man who allegedly started a fire inside an east-end business.

According to police, a man was asked to leave a Huron Street business after becoming disruptive around 12:45 a.m. Friday. A garbage can inside the business was soon lit on fire, which prompted staff to call police.

When officers arrived the disruptive man ran away.

After a brief chase, the man was arrested. However, during the arrest an officer was punched in the face, causing minor injuries.

A 36-year-old London man is charged with arson causing property damage, assaulting a peace officer, and resisting arrest. He was scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
