Thieves thwarted by off-duty police officer

An off-duty police officer is being credited with stopping a pair of thieves from rummaging through vehicles in St. Thomas.

The officer spotted two men who were allegedly stealing from vehicles in a north-end driveway early last Wednesday. He identified himself as an officer and was able to take one of the men into custody.

The other man took off in a grey Mazda 3.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a 30-year-old man on charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to comply with recognizance, trespassing by night, theft, failure to comply with probation, and escaping lawful custody, according to St. Thomas police.

A 39-year-old St. Thomas man is also wanted for theft and failure to comply with probation.

The incident has prompted police to issue a reminder to residents not to leave any valuables, wallets, change, or tools inside their vehicles.
