UPDATE: Vanastra man pleads guilty to manslaughter in death of fiancé

A Vanastra man who strangled his fiancé to death has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

On Thursday, in the Superior Court of Justice in Goderich, 30-year-old Corey Volland pleaded guilty to killing Laura Wigelsworth in May 2018, who he was engaged to be married to three months after her death. The pair lived in Vanastra with Wigelsworth's two children and Volland's young daughter.

Wigelsworth was reported missing after police were told she had failed to return from an evening walk. He body was discovered the next day on May 10, 2018, outside Vanastra along Front Road.

The court heard on Thursday that Volland put his fiancé in a headlock and choked her to death after an argument erupted between the pair about Volland’s use of cocaine. He then drove around Vanastra looking for a place to hide her body. After his arrest, Volland made up a story about a masked intruder.

Following his guilty plea, Volland said he never meant to kill his fiancé.

Volland was originally charged with second-degree murder. The 10-year sentence, with credit for time served, was agreed upon by the crown and defence. Volland has been in custody for 16 months.
