Elderly woman awakened by intruder next to her bed

An elderly Simcoe woman was able to chase an intruder from her home after she awoke to find the man in her bedroom.

The Ontario Provincial Police said on Thursday at around 6 a.m., the woman who was sleeping in her South Drive home in Simcoe was woken up by an unknown man crawling across her bedroom floor on his hand and knees.  The man was in the process of going through a purse that was next to the bed. The elderly homeowner immediately confronted the man, who then fled from the home.

The intruder was able to make off with a large quantity of US currency and around $20,000 dollars in jewellery.

A next-door neighbour spotted the man running from the home and described him as a white male, 17 to 20 years of age, wearing a grey coat with a red hood, dark jeans and white running shoes.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS).
