UPDATE: Ruptured gas line forces people out of their homes in Tillsonburg

Approximately 60 homes were evacuated in Tillsonburg after a gas line was struck by lightning early Sunday morning.

According to OPP in Oxford County, the gas line was struck around 3 a.m. at a residence on Kara Lane. Following the incident, a large quantity of natural gas was released into several homes and into the underground sewer lines.

"As a result of the high concentration of gas, approximately 60 homes in the area have been evacuated for public safety," OPP said in a statement.

All residents impacted by the gas leak were moved to the Tillsonburg Community Centre as they waited for updates.

Union Gas restored the gas and residents were allowed back in their homes around 1 p.m. Sunday.
