Driver escapes submerged vehicle after driving it into a ravine

A 60-year-old man is lucky to be alive after his vehicle plunged 20 feet into a ravine in Delhi, however, his dog was not as fortunate.

The Ontario Provincial Police said on Sunday shortly before 8:30 p.m., the driver failed to negotiate a curve on Swimming Pool Road, smashed through a guardrail and drove into the ravine, completely submerging the vehicle in water.

The driver, who is from Marathon, Ontario, was able to free himself and then waited for emergency services to arrive. He was taken to a local hospital and later transfered to a Hamilton area hospital with serious injuries.

Emergency crews later discovered a dead dog inside the vehicle when it was removed from the water.

Police allege that the driver may have been impaired by drugs and charges are pending.  An investigation is ongoing.
