The Muslim community in London is standing in solidarity with those who lost their "bedrock of a community" when their homes were destroyed during an explosion in the city's Old East Village.
The London Muslim Mosque is holding a BBQ on Sunday in support of those impacted by the tragic explosion on August 14, that occurred when a vehicle crashed into a home at 450 Woodman Ave. and severed a gas line. Three homes have since been demolished and another five homes have been deemed unsafe for reentry.
"A home is a bedrock of a community and the destruction of a home has a significant impact on the family that lived there and those around," said Muslim community spokesperson Nawaz Tahir.
When homes are destroyed in a community, it affects us all and all of us that are able to, have an obligation to step up and assist those who are impacted by a tragedy like this,” said Tahir. "That is the very essence of the notion of community – to look after each other in troubling times. The Muslim community in London is so blessed to be in a city where love and unity always triumph over tragedy. The Muslim community has enjoyed the support of the community on many occasions, and so on this occasion, it is important for it to show unity and solidarity with its neighbours."
The BBQ will be held from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the mosque located at 151 Oxford St. The BBQ is free to attend, but the Muslim community is asking that people make monetary donations, which will be sent to affected families.
