300 pigs rescued from burning barn

Firefighters in East Zorra Tavistock saved approximately 300 pigs from a burning barn early Wednesday morning.

Fire crews and Oxford OPP were called about the large fire at a farm on Maplewood Sideroad, south of Tavistock, shortly before 5 a.m. When crews arrived one of the barns was engulfed in flames.

"We were able to save one of the buildings to the west, that had approximately 300 sows in it. We do have some casualties here, but due to the hard work of the guys at least we have some success out of this," East Zorra Tavistock Fire Chief Scott Alexander said in a Periscope video from the scene.

It is not known how many animals were killed in the fire.

While the blaze isn't considered suspicious, the Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in, in hopes of learning from this incident new ways to prevent future barn fires, according to Alexander.

OPP Constable Ed Sanchuk said damage from the fire is estimated at $2 million.

Maplewood Sideroad between Highway 59 and 13th Line was closed for several hours.
