Suspected drunk driver takes out hydro pole

It was a major headache for drivers in south London after a vehicle collided with a hydro pole, shutting down a section of Wellington Road.

The vehicle was heading north on Wellington Road when it hit a pole north of Commissioners Road East around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The force of the crash sent the vehicle into a fence on the east side of Wellington, before it came to a stop.

The adult male driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was not hurt. He allegedly ran from the scene following the crash, but was tracked down by the police K9 unit a short distance away at Wellington and Base Line roads.

"Weather was a factor [in the crash]. In addition, the male driver was also believed to be impaired," said London police Constable Brittany Campbell. "So he has been taken into custody and the investigation is ongoing."

The northbound lanes of Wellington Road between Commissioners Road and Base Line Road were closed for roughly eight hours while London Hydro repaired the affected pole. One northbound lane was reopened to traffic around 12:40 p.m.
