Boler Mountain opens for the season Saturday

Skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts will be hitting the slopes in London earlier than normal.

Boler Mountain has announced it will open its doors for the winter season on Saturday. It is the ski operation's earliest opening in 30 years.

“We had seven straight nights of snowmaking operations during the recent cold snap,” said Marty Thody, Boler's manager of outside operations. “Despite the recent warm-up and rain, we will be skiing and boarding on five runs this weekend."

Those looking to spent a little time outdoors won't have to bundle up too much either, with Environment Canada calling for daytime highs of 5 C and 3 C on Saturday and Sunday.

Skiiers and snowboarders can take to the slopes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends only for the time being. The Byron-area non-profit's $6.1 million chalet and food services will also be operating.

The opening comes 20 days earlier than last year, when Boler kicked off its ski season on December 12.

More than 120,000 people flock to Boler each year.
