Thames Valley elementary teachers hitting picket lines

Elementary students in the London area are getting a day off Wednesday as their teachers hold a one-day strike.

The walkout by members of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario is part of a series of rotating strikes by the union that is targeting different school boards each day. The Thames Valley District School Board, Rainy River School Board, and Rainbow District School Board are being targeted on Wednesday.

“We know that this is a challenge for parents, but it is crystal clear that Mr. Ford’s Education Minister is only interested in cuts to education,” said ETFO Local President Craig Smith. “We are asking parents to stand with us to protect the future of public education. The programs we are fighting for today will have an impact on children now and in the future.”

The Thames Valley District School Board says all elementary schools will be closed for the day on Wednesday. They will reopen on Thursday.

The one-day strike at TVDSB elementary schools comes one day after Catholic schools across Ontario were hit by a one-day strike by members of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association.
