Crash leads to St. Thomas man's 10th impaired driving charge

St. Thomas police say a 60-year-old man has racked up his 10th impaired driving charge after crashing into a concrete barrier on Family Day.

A police cruiser was heading north on First Avenue around 1 p.m. on Monday when a southbound vehicle crossed the centre line and ended up in the path of the cruiser. The officer behind the wheel was able to avoid the head-on collision and quickly turned around to follow the vehicle.

The officer caught up to the other driver as the vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier while attempting to merge onto the Highway 3 bypass.

The driver was arrested without incident after failing a sobriety test, police said.

A 60-year-old St. Thomas man has been charged with impaired operation by drugs. His vehicle has also been impounded.

According to police, this is the man's 10th impaired driving offence.
