Driver identified in fatal snowmobile accident

A 40-year-old man from North Middlesex has died after a snowmobile fell through the ice and into the York River in the Town of Bancroft.

Provincial police said officers were called to the river around 10:13 p.m. on Friday night. However, officers were unable to immediately find the driver.

Both the driver and snowmobile were later found with help from the OPP underwater search and recovery unit. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have identified him as Matt Porter of North Middlesex.
