Fire at York Street building deemed suspicious

London police and fire officials have determined a fire last week at a York Street location once pitched as a possible site for the city's supervised consumption facility is suspicious in nature.

Firefighters were called to the vacant building at 372 York St. around 11:20 p.m. last Wednesday. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames and no one was hurt.

Damage to the building is set at $35,000.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but investigators believe the fire was the result of arson.

The cause has been turned over to the police street crime unit. Police are working in conjunction with the Ontario Fire Marshal's office.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The location was the first site selected by the Middlesex London Health Unit to house a supervised drug consumption facility. However, the landlord pulled the lease option in April 2018 following push back from other nearby businesses.
