Teen charged after vehicle takes off from police, hits pole

A 16-year-old from St. Thomas is facing nearly half a dozen charges after a vehicle sped away from police and crashed into a hydro pole.

Elgin OPP spotted a grey pickup truck being driven in what they called a "reckless manner" on Lakeshore Line near McCord Street near Port Burwell around 12 a.m. on Tuesday. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it kept going. Police chose not to chase the vehicle.

A short time later, officers found the truck abandoned on Lakeshore Line at Clarke Road, where it had collided with a hydro pole.

The canine unit was brought in to help police search for the driver and passengers of the vehicle.

Five people ranging in age from 16 to 20 were soon located by police.

A 16-year-old from St. Thomas has since been charged with stunt driving, careless driving, failure to remain at the scene, driving without a licence, and flight from police.
