London cop charged in domestic assault

A London police officer is charged and on administrative leave after allegations emerged that he assaulted a woman he was in a relationship with.

London police announced Monday that the officer was charged after an allegation was made last week. It was reported to police that a woman that the officer had been in a relationship with was assaulted between November of 2018 and February of 2019. Police said the assault happened while the officer was off-duty.

Police said they are not releasing the officer's name in order to protect the identity of the victim.

"The officer has 16 years of service as a police officer with the London Police Service and is presently on an administrative leave," police said in a news release issued Monday.

The officer has been released from custody with conditions. He is to appear in court on August 20.

"As this matter is before the courts, the London Police Service will not comment further," police said.
