Fatal fentanyl overdose leads to manslaughter charge

The overdose death of a man in Oxford County has resulted in a manslaughter charge against the woman who allegedly provided the lethal drug.

Woodstock police announced on Thursday that Samantha Vanbelleghem, 34, is now charged with manslaughter, trafficking in a Schedule 1 substance (fentanyl), and two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.

The charges stem from the death of a 26-year-old Oxford County man on January 29.

Police said Vanbelleghem is being held in custody until her next court appearance on Friday.

"Fentanyl continues to be a serious issue in our City and County," police said in a statement issued Thursday. "Woodstock Police is committed to the education and enforcement of drug use in this community."
