Suspect in arson of abandoned building arrested

A tip from the public helped London police capture a man wanted in connection with the suspected arson of an abandoned building in June.

Firefighters were called to the fire at the rear of the building on Adelaide Street near Nelson Street on June 7. No one was hurt, but the blaze caused $68,500 damage.

Investigators determined the fire had been deliberately set and in the days that followed issued an arrest warrant for Shawn Matthew Eggett, 36, of London.

He was arrested on June 19 as a "direct result" of a tip from the public, police said on Friday.

Eggett is charged with arson with disregard for human life and two counts of arson causing damage to property. He remains in police custody and is awaiting a court date.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank the public for sharing the information," police added.
