Arson charge laid in Port Stanley boat fire

Two days after a commercial fishing boat went up in flames at the Port Stanley harbour, a 19-year-old has been charged with arson.

Emergency crews were called to the harbour around 11:45 p.m. on Saturday where they found the vessel engulfed in flames. The Central Elgin Fire Department was able to contain and extinguish the blaze.

No one was hurt, but the fire did cause an estimated $750,000 damage.

Elgin OPP arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the blaze over the weekend. On Monday, they announced the man had been charged with arson. The accused has been released from police custody and will appear in court on October 6.

Police continue to urge anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area around the fishing boat, either before or after the fire, and who has yet to speak with officers to call them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477 (TIPS).
