Fire causes extensive damage to southwest London home

Damage is estimated at $450,000 after a house fire in southwest London Tuesday morning.

Fire crews were called to the large home on Homewood Lane north of Longwoods Road around 8 a.m. When firefighters arrived on scene they were met with heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage.

"There are no hydrants in the area so we set up port-a-tankers, where tankers shuttle a large amount of water back and forth so firefighters can use that supply of water to extinguish the fire," said Platoon Chief Kirk Loveland. "It's a little more work because normally we connect the pumper to the hydrant and get a constant water supply. In this situation, we have to have tankers shuttle in water. They set up a tank and fill it with water that has been trucked in from the nearest hydrant."

Firefighters doused the flames without issue and began venting smoke from the house.

"There is smoke damage everywhere. There is substantial damage to the garage, to cars and different items stored in the garage. It is extensive," said Loveland.

The occupants of the home were able to escape before fire crews arrived and no injuries were reported.

A fire investigator has been called in to determine the cause and origin of the fire. However, the blaze is not considered suspicious.
