COVID-19 outbreaks declared at two London area hospitals

There are two local hospitals grappling with COVID-19 outbreaks.

So far, six staff have tested positive for the virus in the Emergency Department at University Hospital (UH).  London Health Sciences Centre says no patients have tested positive or were exposed.

At this time, the UH Emergency Department remains open and is safe for patients who need emergency care as the risk of infection for patients remains low. Additional cleaning and safety measures have been implemented to control the outbreak.

The last outbreak at UH was resolved on December 29, 2020.

Elsewhere, the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital (SMGH) is dealing with its first outbreak of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

The outbreak has been declared on the second floor inpatient unit.

The hospital is working closely with the Middlesex London Health Unit to investigate the cause of the outbreak. Meanwhile, the Middlesex Hospital Alliance's Infection Prevention and Control experts are monitoring the situation closely.

The inpatient unit has been closed to all new admissions while staff work to clean and disinfect it.

Blackburn News London reached out for more information but SMGH provided no further details at this time.
