Arson charge laid in southwest London motel fire

A 26-year-old London man has been charged with arson in connection with a fire that forced the evacuation of a southwest London motel.

Firefighters were called to Wharncliffe Suites Motel on Wharncliffe Road around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The blaze on the second floor led to the evacuation of the building. Those forced out were kept warm inside of a London Transit bus.

No injuries were reported and fire crews were able to extinguish the fire relatively quickly.

The fire was deemed suspicious and investigators with the London police street crime unit and Officer of the Fire Marshal were on scene for much of the day.

Police used video surveillance to help nab a suspect, who was arrested on the north side of the building roughly 15 minutes after the fire was called in.

Joshua Joel Nelson, 26, of London, is charged with arson with disregard for human life and breach of probation.
