SIU investigating man's death in London police custody

Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a 34-year-old man died while in the custody of London police.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the man was arrested for failing to comply with bail conditions around 3:30 p.m. Monday. He was taken to police headquarters on Dundas Street where he was processed and then placed in a cell overnight.

The man told officers he was not feeling well just after 9 a.m. Tuesday. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

There has been no indication about what the cause of death may have been.

The SIU has assigned two investigators and one forensic investigator to look into the man's death in police custody. Anyone who may have information about this incident is asked to call the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. Video evidence can also be uploaded to the SIU's website.

As an independent government agency, the SIU investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
