Man who died after London police arrest identified

The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has identified the 34-year-old London man who died while in police custody earlier this week.

Fabian Hart died in hospital on Tuesday after going into medical distress while locked in a cell at London police headquarters. The SIU released his name on Thursday after getting permission from Hart's family.

Hart had been arrested the afternoon prior to his death for failing to comply with release conditions. He was processed and placed in a cell at 601 Dundas Street. Around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Hart told officers he was not feeling well.

"When he went into medical distress, officers performed first aid until emergency medical services arrived," the SIU said.

Hart was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead around 9:40 a.m.

An autopsy has been performed, but a cause of death has not been publicly released.

The SIU has identified one subject officer, four witness officers, and two witness employees as part of its investigation.

Anyone with information about the death are asked to call investigators at 1-800-787-8529 or upload video to the SIU’s website.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
