Snowmobiler "lucky to be alive" after falling through ice

Provincial police say a snowmobiler was seriously hurt after falling through the ice on a pond northeast of Woodstock.

The 26-year-old was out riding in Blandford-Blenheim Township when they became separated from friends around 3:30 a.m. Monday. The snowmobiler drove across a frozen pond, causing the ice to crack and the machine to sink. The driver was able to pull themselves from the frigid water.

Emergency crews were called and searched the area for more than two hours before finding the snowmobiler outside of Innerkip around 6 a.m. The individual was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The 26-year-old was "lucky to be alive" after the frightening incident, Oxford OPP said.
