Man charged in disturbance at St. Thomas homeless shelter

Charges have been laid in connection with a disturbance at a St. Thomas homeless shelter that saw a fire extinguisher emptied and an employee shoved.

The incident at the downtown drop-in centre began Monday afternoon when a man began arguing with staff. He is alleged to have grabbed a fire extinguisher off the wall and discharged it before pushing an employee as he left.

St. Thomas police were called and a suspect was arrested near the shelter.

A 26-year-old St. Thomas man is charged with assault, mischief to property, and breach of release conditions.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
