East London apartment fire deemed suspicious

A fire at an east London apartment building that sent one person to hospital may have been deliberately set.

The blaze broke out in a third floor unit at 563 Mornington Avenue east of Curry Street around 12:20 a.m. on Sunday. Firefighters arrived on scene and quickly doused the fire.

One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Damage has been estimated at $200,000.

London police have determined the fire to be suspicious in nature and continue to investigate along with fire prevention investigators and the Ontario Fire Marshal.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

This is the second time in less than a week firefighters have been called to the Mornington Avenue apartment building. Roughly $50,000 damage was caused last Wednesday after fire broke out in an eighth floor unit. Firefighters determined that fire was the result of careless cooking.
