8 people escape $200K south London townhouse fire

Eight people made it out of a burning townhouse in south London without injury early Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out at the complex at 700 Osgoode Drive around 5 a.m. When firefighters arrived on scene the flames had spread to two units and eight residents had safely escaped.

According to the fire department, the blaze was quickly brought under control and extinguished following an "aggressive fire attack" by its crews.

No injuries were reported and damage is estimated at $200,000.

A fire investigator will be on scene throughout the day to determine the cause.

The blaze came several hours after a home in southeast London was gutted by fire.

Fire crews were called to the two-storey house at 141 Madison Avenue Monday afternoon.

Working smoke alarms are credited with alerting and giving residents enough time to get out safely.

The fire caused "extensive damage" to the home, firefighters said on Twitter.

The cause is under investigation.
