London to host 2024 Ontario Summer Games

After the pandemic scrapped the Ontario Summer Games in London for a second year, the province has announced the games will be played in the city in 2024.

At a news conference on Tuesday, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism, and Culture Industries Lisa MacLeod announced that London will host the 2024 games with a provincial hosting grant of $1-million. London was to host the games in 2020, but the event was postponed until 2021. However, the province said the games will not go on this summer, due to the ongoing pandemic.

“We are very excited to welcome the Ontario Summer Games back to London in 2024,” said London Mayor Ed Holder. “While unfortunate to all those who had worked so hard to prepare for the 2021 Games, this is the best decision for the safety of all involved. Thank you to the Province of Ontario for the opportunity to host this event once again, and I have no doubt that London will put on an extraordinary experience in 2024.”

According to the province, the 2024 Ontario Summer Games are expected to deliver an economic impact of $5-million for London.
