Police officers assaulted during arrest

A London man faces charges after police allege he assaulted two officers who were arresting him.

Just before 11 a.m. Tuesday, police were called about a man banging on the window of a bank on Commissioners Road near Highbury Avenue. Two officers went to the scene and determined that the man was wanted in relation to another matter.

"When the two officers attempted to arrest the man, he spat at them, and struck them multiple times with a closed fist," police alleged. "The suspect continued to resist arrest, and two citizens stopped their vehicle to assist police in holding the suspect down until other officers arrived on scene."

Police said one of the officers suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The other officer and suspect were not injured.

A 35-year-old London man is charged with assaulting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm, and resisting arrest.

Anyone with information in relation to this incident is asked to call the London Police Service at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Information can also be sent in online anonymously to London Elgin Middlesex Crime Stoppers.
