SIU probing arrest in London

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is looking into the arrest of a man in London who was injured while being taken into custody under the Mental Health Act.

Around 1:30 a.m. Monday, police were called to an apartment building in the area of Oxford Street and Talbot Street. Police had been told that a man was acting erratically in a hallway.

"Paramedics were requested to attend to medically assess the male, however before their arrival, the male became resistive and uncooperative," London police said in a statement issued Monday. "In order to ensure the safety of the male and the public, police detained him under the Mental Health Act and subsequently transported him to hospital. During the course of detaining the male, it was later found that he had sustained an injury."

No other details about the man's injury have been released, but the SIU has invoked its mandate and will be investigating the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the SIU at 416-622-0748 or 1-800-787-8529.
