Backhoe severs gas line prompting evacuation

Several homes and businesses in southeast London were evacuated Tuesday morning after a backhoe severed a natural gas line.

Construction crews were working on a fenced off corner lot at Adelaide and Nelson streets after 7:30 a.m. when the gas line was struck.

Emergency crews were called to the scene and the intersection was blocked off. Homes and businesses in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

Enbridge shut the gas off to the area while crews worked to repair the line. The London Fire Department was on scene to monitor gas levels.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

The area was reopened to traffic and the public just before 9:30 a.m.
