London-area jobless rate falls again

For the second straight month, the London area saw its unemployment rate fall.

According to figures released Friday by Statistics Canada, the jobless rate for the London Census Metropolitan Area was 7.8 per cent in August, down from 9.1 per cent in July.

The London CMA includes St. Thomas, Strathroy, and other surrounding communities.

The drop came as 1,900 new jobs were created in the area last month. That brought the number of people in the area who have jobs to 281,900.

Nationally, 90,000 new jobs were created in August, leading to a drop in the jobless rate to 7.1 per cent. The Ontario rate was 7.6 per cent in August, as 53,000 new jobs were added. Ontario's unemployment rate was an even 8 per cent in July.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
