Driver clocked doing twice the speed limit in Lucan

Stunt driving charges have been laid against a Londoner after a vehicle was clocked travelling at twice the posted speed limit north of the city.

The vehicle was on Richmond Street in Lucan allegedly doing just over 100 kilometres/hour when Middlesex OPP stopped it around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The posted speed limit on that road is 50 kilometres/hour.

A 29-year-old from London is charged with stunt driving and has had their vehicle impounded for 14 days. The individual's licence has also been suspended for 30 days, police said.

The Ontario government toughened the penalties and lowered the threshold for stunt driving last year. The charge now applies to anyone caught driving more than 40 km/h above the speed limit on roads with a limit of 80 km/h or lower or doing 50 km/h or more over the limit on all other roads. Driver licence suspensions were increased to 30 days from seven, and vehicle impoundments were doubled to two weeks.
