Driver charged in fatal Strathroy collision

Police in Middlesex County have arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in fall 2021.

Ontario Provincial Police say the driver, from Brooke-Alvinston, was arrested Thursday without incident. He is charged with failing to stop at a fatal collision.

The charge has not been proven in court.

The suspect has been held in custody and was due to appear in a London court on Friday.

Cyclist Iwan Johannes Smolders, 45, was headed west on Calvert Drive in Adelaide-Metcalfe, when he was hit by a vehicle heading the same direction on the evening of October 11, 2021. Smolders was thrown from his bike and died at the scene.
