Funding approved for London elementary school

A public school in London will be getting a long-overdue expansion.

The Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) announced on Friday that a $7.2-million expansion for Eagle Heights Public School was approved by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

"This is great news for students, families and community members in the Eagle Heights Public School community," said Director of Education Mark Fisher in a media release. "We are very excited the Ministry of Education has supported this much-needed expansion."

The expansion will provide space for 300 additional students. The funding will also cover renovations to rightsize the school's offices and library to relieve a school enrollment crunch in that area of London.

Eagle Heights was originally built to house 680 students. A total of 18 portable classrooms are needed to accommodate the current school population, which is over a thousand.

No word was given Friday evening on a timetable for the construction.
